The Central Flower Market began operating at Mercabarna on 7 April 1984. Before that, the Market had, since 1964, operated out of carrer Lleida in Barcelona, ​​a space now occupied by the Lliure Theatre, building on a long commercial tradition of florists which began at the start of the 20th century in Les Rambles in Barcelona. 

On 21 April 2001, a devastating fire completely destroyed the market's facilities at Mercabarna and for seven years the wholesale companies operated from a temporary building next to the old one.

The new flower market, called Mercabarna-flor, opened in 2008 on a plot of 44,000 m² located outside the Mercabarna precinct in the municipal district of Sant Boi, next to El Prat Airport.

The centre has three different sales areas (flowers, plants and accessories) adapted to the needs of each product, as well as a flower arranging school, training rooms, rooms for creating flower arrangements and a restaurant-cafeteria, among other customer services.
