World Fruit and Vegetable Promotion

Josep Faura, director of Mercabarna’s Central Fruit and Vegetable Market, and María José Sala, ‘5-a-Day’ coordinator, attended the session to learn about the experience of these and other countries. They found that the campaign run by Mercabarna and the AGEM (Association of Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Dealers of Barcelona and Province) for nine years now is a singular initiative and unique in the world.
During the sessions, scientists, doctors and nutritionists also presented different studies on the eating habits of European children. It was revealed that Spain continues to be one of the lowest-ranked countries in terms of fruit and vegetable consumption by this population segment.
