The Food Unit (Unitat Alimentària) occupies a very good position both locally and internationally thanks to the large number of firms it brings together that specialise in the sale, transformation and distribution of fresh food. Every day these companies provide added value and more services for their customers.
All these activities are possible thanks to the wholesale markets and the Complementary Activities Zone (ZAC).
In Mercabarna there are:

The large number of companies selling food in the same place at the same time means that there is an abundance of supply and of variety of produce from around the world. It also makes it possible to establish market prices.

A wide range of Auxiliary activities associated with the Central Markets take place in the ZAC. It is a fine example of how Mercabarna has developed over the years.

The purchasing centres of large food distribution chains that source fresh produce from Mercabarna.

A wide range of logistic service companies specialised in food supply and user support: large cold store companies, transport companies, quality control laboratories, packaging companies, mechanic’s workshops, bank branches, restaurants, hotel, petrol stations, kindergarten, chemist’s, IT service companies, messenger service companies, consultancies, ironmongers’, etc.
