Good news for pedestrians who want to enter or depart from Mercabarna via Zona Franca’s Calle F! Since July, two revolving doors have been in operation in Calle Longitudinal 11, providing direct access to Calle F.
Fish and seafood professionals from across Spain have a two-day rendezvous in Barcelona on 29 and 30 October. The occasion is ANMAPE’s “1st Congress of Wholesale Fishmongers in Mercas”.
On 15 September, Montserrat Gil de Bernabé, managing director of Mercabarna, Pablo Vilanova, Studies and Development manager, Toni Nieto, manager of the Customer Service Office (OAC), and the heads of the Training Centre, met with the representatives of the Pakistani Workers’ Association of Catalonia.
On 21 July, Mercabarna received a visit from a delegation representing SO.GE.MI, the company that manages the Milan Wholesale Market. The group was headed by the chair of the organisation, Stefano Zani, and included its technical director, Antonio Grassi and the manager of the Fruit and Vegetable Market, Pierangelo Mapelli.
The Ignasi Iglésias-Can Fabra Library is hosting the exhibition Fotointerpreta, an initiative by Barcelona’s Documentary Photography Centre and by the library network, based on a photographic interpretation of a literary work dedicated to the city. Mercabarna has a main paper.
On 6 August, Jordi William Carnes, Mercabarna’s chair and Barcelona’s deputy mayor in charge of Finance and Economic Promotion, held a press conference in Mercabarna where among other matters he announced that the fruit offer at the Central Fruit and Vegetable Market increases by up to 20% in the summer months.
On 18 June and following the period of drought which affected Barcelona, Mercabarna hosted the day session “The Present and Future of Water in Mercabarna” with the aim of sharing experiences and providing ideas for fostering more conscientious water consumption in the Food Unit.
At present, Mercabarna has the largest Slaughterhouse in Catalonia, where 25% of the total animals in this autonomous region are slaughtered (cattle, sheep and horse). Now this centre is facing a process of change, in order to respond to increased demand prompted by the growth of the immigrant population and market globalisation. This process is highlighted by two developments: the enlargement of the Slaughterhouse and the construction of a new slaughter line for lambs.
On 11 July, Jaume Bosch, mayor of Sant Boi de Llobregat, visited the Mercabarna-flor facilities. The mayor showed great interest in getting to know this new market because, although a small part of it is located on property belonging to El Prat de Llobregat, most of it is in Sant Boi.
In the early hours of 3-4 October 1983, the Central Fish Market began its activity in Mercabarna, following its move from Barcelona’s Calle Wellington. 25 years have passed since then and, to celebrate this milestone, Mercabarna and the Fresh and Frozen Fish and Shellfish Wholesale Consignees’ Guild of Barcelona and Province (GMP) will give a party on 19 October, to which Market business owners, buyers and employees are invited.
