The environment and cleaning
What is Green Point
Selective refuse disposal site
- The Green Point facilities (selective refuse disposal site) were inaugurated in May 2002.
- This is a multi-function centre covering 5,700 square metres where users, both wholesalers and buyers, can separate and deposit the waste materials generated by their commercial activities.
A pioneering facility
- This is a pioneering facility, because it was built to answer the specific needs of Mercabarna users.
- There are two differentiated zones within the facility, one for wholesalers and the other for buyers.
Collection, separation and recycling
- At the Green Point facilities buyers deposit their commercial waste material separated into two classes: organic and inorganic (above all containers). Inorganic waste material is transported by conveyor belt to a centre where the waste is further separated according to type (plastic, cardboard, wood, etc.).
- Wholesalers deposit their commercial waste material in various containers according to type: organic material, plastic, cardboard, wood, etc.
- A whole range of specialised companies are then responsible for recycling the waste material that has been collected and separated in Mercabarna.
