Slaughter lines

There are two slaughter lines equipped with the most modern technology: one for cattle and horses and one for sheep and goats.

Infrastructure and facilities

The slaughterhouse facilities cover 40,000 square metres and also include:

  • animal reception corrals (6,500 square metres)
  • a bleeding area
  • ‘ritual box’ (equipment for immobilising the animal enabling ritual slaughter, improving health and safety conditions, reducing the animal’s suffering and facilitating the operatives’ work)
  • refrigerated and automated sales hall (1,200 square metres)
  • cold store facilities (22,000 cubic metres)
  • evisceration area
  • food safety inspection services
  •  
  • offices for user companies

Ritual slaughter

In May 2004 Mercabarna made a new service available in response to the rising Jewish and Muslim population in Catalonia: ritual slaughter.

At the present time 40% of the cattle and 30% of the sheep arriving at the slaughterhouse are slaughtered in this manner.

The slaughterhouse at Mercabarna has the Halal Guarantee distinction awarded by the Junta Islámica de España (Muslim Council of Spain) that certifies that animals have been slaughtered in accordance with the rites of the Muslim religion.
