The slaughterhouse moved to Mercabarna on 29 March 1979. Until then the municipal slaughterhouse, known by the name of La Vinyeta, was located on the site now occupied by the Parc de Joan Miró in Barcelona, near the Plaça de Espanya.
At the present time the slaughterhouse covers an area of some 40,000 square metres and has two slaughter lines equipped with the most modern technology: one for cattle and horses and one for sheep and goats.
The Mercabarna slaughterhouse, producing 31,500 tonnes of meat per annum, is the largest slaughterhouse in Catalonia and the second-largest in Spain with regard to the slaughter of cattle.
